The dramatic volcanic peak of Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is one of Tanzania’s most unique and adventurous trekking destinations. Located in the remote Great Rift Valley near Lake Natron, this active volcano rises to about 2,960 meters (9,711 ft) above sea level.
Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, often called “cold lava.” Unlike typical red-hot lava, this rare lava appears dark brown or black and flows more fluidly, almost like water. Although cooler than most volcanic lava, it still reaches temperatures of about 500–600°C, making it a fascinating geological wonder.
The surrounding area is equally impressive. Lake Natron, a highly alkaline soda lake, is famous for hosting thousands of pink flamingos, making it one of the most important flamingo breeding grounds in East Africa. The landscape around the lake is dramatic, with volcanic mountains, open plains, Maasai villages, and spectacular views of the Great Rift Valley.
This 2-day adventure combines cultural experiences, scenic landscapes, waterfall exploration, and a night ascent of Ol Doinyo Lengai to witness sunrise from the summit.

Your adventure begins early in the morning when our driver picks you up from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha at around 6:00 AM. You will drive through beautiful landscapes of northern Tanzania toward Lake Natron, located near the Kenyan border.
The journey itself is very scenic. Along the way you may see Maasai villages, traditional livestock herding, wildlife, and breathtaking views of the Great Rift Valley escarpment.
You will arrive at your lodge or campsite near Lake Natron around lunchtime. After checking in and having lunch, the afternoon is dedicated to exploring the area.
Ngare Sero Waterfall Walk
In the afternoon your guide will take you on a guided walking tour to Ngare Sero Waterfalls. The trail passes through a narrow gorge where you may walk through shallow streams and shaded canyon paths. Because of the water crossings, it is recommended to wear sandals or water shoes.
The waterfall area is a refreshing oasis surrounded by cliffs and lush vegetation — a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature.
Lake Natron Flamingo Walk
Later you will visit the shores of Lake Natron, where you can witness large groups of flamingos feeding along the shallow waters. This is a fantastic opportunity for photography and to experience the unique beauty of this remote lake.
Dinner will be served at your lodge or campsite, followed by some rest before the midnight climb.

Night: Start of Ol Doinyo Lengai Climb
After resting for several hours, you will wake up around 11:00 PM. At 11:30 PM, our driver will take you to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai to begin your climb.
Climbing at night helps avoid the intense heat of the daytime sun.
The trek is steep and physically demanding, taking about 5–8 hours depending on your pace and fitness level. The path consists mainly of volcanic ash and rocky slopes, so careful footing is important. Your experienced guide will lead the way and ensure safety throughout the climb.
Short breaks are taken regularly during the ascent to regain energy and adjust to the increasing altitude.

Day 2: Summit – Descent – Return to Moshi / Arusha
You will reach the crater rim of Ol Doinyo Lengai (2,960 m) just before sunrise. From the summit you can enjoy a spectacular view of:
• The Great Rift Valley
• Lake Natron below
• Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru on clear days
From the crater you may even hear volcanic activity from inside the mountain. Watching the sunrise from the “Mountain of God” is a truly unforgettable experience.
After enjoying the summit views and taking photographs, you will begin the descent back to the base, which usually takes around 3–4 hours.
Although descending is easier than climbing, it requires careful footing as most accidents happen during descent.
At the base, your driver will be waiting with refreshing cold drinks before beginning the drive back to Moshi or Arusha, arriving in the afternoon.
